This video by Jim Cunneen from Gardeniere is a great demonstration on how to make the most of a shady area in the garden. Jim explains that shade can be partial which means that it receives between 3 an 6 hours of sun each day and full shade which means 3 hours or less. It is full shade which he concentrates on in this video. Plants that are suitable for full shade include Hostas, Verbena and Mondo Grass which makes a good groundcover. Jim then takes you through the full process of soil preparation and amendment, planting and finally adding a mulch to preserve moisture. Please go to the next page to watch the video where Jim shows you how to do it.
