SPRING FLOWERING BULBS THAT DEER DISLIKE

In a recent post I featured an article by Margaret Roach which described various ways to protect a garden from deer. This was mainly concerned with barriers of different types whereas this post is all about spring flowering bulbs that deer hate. While it’s common knowledge that daffodil bulbs are toxic and so all animals steer clear, I had not realized that some of the others mentioned below were disliked by deer. The information comes from an article by Lynne Cherot which I found on the Sensible Gardening website.

Gardening with deer has it?s headaches and bulbs are one of them. The spring garden comes alive with bulbs and not to have them is a real shame. There are some bulbs that deer won?t touch and over the years by trial and error I?ve gotten to know which ones they are.

is when we plant most of our bulbs and it is a fairly big chore. Nothing is more disappointing than to watch your bulbs grow in the spring and just before blooming, crunch goes the bud into a deers mouth. If you plant bulbs that deer like you will most likely never see a flower.

Many of the deer proof bulbs are on the smaller side, so for best effect choose a couple you like and plant lots of them. Grow them in drifts or pockets around large rocks or garden statuary. That way they will stand out and you will get more bang for your buck. It?s always more effective to plant bulbs in groups of similar types than just a few of each kind scattered all over the garden.?

Here is list of the bulbs I grow successfully, even with deer literally living in my rural garden. It always feels good when I can outsmart them!

DEER RESISTANT BULBS:

DAFFODIL (Narcissus) grow from 3-16 inches tall with many varieties to choose from.
