If you are planning a trip to New Zealand one place that you should include in your itinerary is the Chinese Garden in Dunedin. The garden is unusual in that it was designed and created in Shanghai and then shipped over to Dunedin where it was recreated by Chinese craftsmen. I found this on a blog called “What we did on our holidays”. There is not much description, but an amazing collection of pictures.
If you ever find yourself near Dunedin you MUST visit the Chinese Garden, it is wonderful.
The garden is in the centre of Dunedin just along from the railway station and Otago Settlers museum (which is also worth a visit) but once you get inside you feel like you are in another world it is so peaceful and quiet.
The garden isn?t very big but be prepared to spend an hour or so in it as there is something new to see around every corner. ?It is quite amazing how cleverly it has been designed.
It is a scholar?s garden and was designed and built in Shanghai before being taken apart, shipped over to Dunedin and rebuilt by Chinese craftsmen.
The design is Chinese and is based on the principle of yin and yan, for everything there is an opposite and includes a rocky area which represents the mountain.
