14 ARBORS AND PERGOLAS TO REMIND YOU OF SUMMER

Arbors and pergolas are an essential feature of the garden providing support for climbing plants above and shade beneath. This is a slideshow of fourteen rather exotic examples from around the world. Starting with a French chateau, an English manor house and Lamu in Kenya the collection includes pergolas from Italy, Mexico and Brazil. There are also several from the United States. These come from the Architectural Digest website.

In this French ch?teau?s expansive garden, landscape designer Louis Benech artfully balanced the property with a variety of plants that bloom year-round, from spring tulips to summer roses. Although Benech does not have a signature style, the designer is known for mixing French formalism with a more naturalistic English approach to planting. One section, formerly a boxwood square, is now used as a croquet lawn, while another showcases topiaries and hedges. The pictured teak pergola features a wide array of blooms that complement one another?the grapevines that blanket the top of the structure shade red ?Madame Isaac Pereire? roses and purple ?Jackmanii Superba? clematis, providing just the right amount of light. The arch beyond is draped with ?Multijuga? wisteria and more ?Madame Isaac Pereire.? The result is a perfectly dreamy setting no matter the season.
